Welcome to the Ophthalmology Site-Based Research Group (SBRG) at Duke Eye Center
There are more than 120 clinical trials currently being conducted at the Duke Eye Center. These studies involve anything from chart reviews to research on experimental drugs and devices. The Ophthalmology Site-Based Research Group includes clinical research activities in various therapeutic divisions including cornea, glaucoma, oculoplastics, retina, pediatric ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology. Clinical trials allow us to translate science from our labs into new therapies for our patients. Participants in clinical trials can play a more active role in their own health care, gain access to new research treatments before they are widely available, and help others by contributing to medical research.
Duke conducts clinical research requiring Institutional Review Board (IRB) oversight through Site-Based Research Units (SBRs). Each SBR has a leadership structure that consists of a Medical Director, a Lead Study Coordinator, and a Financial Manager. Our SBR serves as the organizational home for site-based research at the Eye Center, and therefore is responsible for the integrity, financial responsibility, regulatory compliance, quality, and academic productivity of research involving human subjects.
