Miracles In Sight Expands Support to Establish the Duke Global Ophthalmology Fellowship

Miracles In Sight, which has helped fund the Duke Cornea Fellowship for a decade, recently expanded their support of the program with a generous gift that will allow us to add a fourth fellow who will be dually trained in cornea and global ophthalmology.  Aiming to make a positive and lasting impact on eye health worldwide, Duke Global Ophthalmology is shaping the future of sight saving eyecare across the globe. With a $400,000 commitment over three years, Miracles In Sight is making possible the Global Ophthalmology Fellowship, a pillar of this effort to develop outstanding ophthalmologists trained specifically to advance global ophthalmology and contribute to curing blindness worldwide.

“We are thrilled to make this commitment to Duke Eye Center in support of the cornea fellowship and inaugural global ophthalmology fellow.  Supporting cornea care, providing high quality tissue, with a focus on education and training, and global ophthalmology are at the core of our mission.  We look forward to the success of Duke Global Ophthalmology and continued collaboration,” said Ingrid Schunder, MBA, CEBT, Miracles In Sight president and chief executive officer.

Providing exceptional training for fellows is a cornerstone of Duke Eye Center’s educational mission. Fellows will help create ophthalmology residency programs in the developing world and contribute to the academic literature and research capacity of ophthalmology programs in those countries.

“This gift is transformative for Duke Global Ophthalmology; global ophthalmology training is essential to impact lives and become a catalyst for positive change on a global scale,” said Lloyd Williams, MD, PhD, associate professor of ophthalmology and director of Duke Global Ophthalmology.

We have a deep appreciation for our longstanding partnership with Miracles In Sight, rooted in shared goals of increasing exposure and awareness of eye banking and combatting blindness and other ophthalmic ailments across the globe.

Philanthropic support such as the gift from Miracles In Sight is essential to our mission to treat and cure visual impairment close to home and around the world, providing critical funding as we train the next generation of ophthalmic leaders, pursue ground-breaking research, and provide outstanding clinical care.
