Director

About the Program

Duke hosts an ASOPRS Oculofacial and Orbital Surgery Fellowship Program that emphasizes well-rounded surgical and clinical training with an optimal balance of supervision and autonomy. The position title for the fellow is clinical associate, which allows the participant to function as a junior faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology.

The two-year Oculofacial and Orbital Surgery Fellowship program offers high volume exposure to a diverse breadth of oculoplastic diseases and procedures. The program also encourages involvement in clinical research.

Clinical training

Clinical training includes time spent with attendings on the oculoplastics service: Julie A. Woodward, MDAmy Fowler, MDJason Liss, MD, and Christopher Dermarkarian, MD. There are also opportunities for the fellow to run their own clinic.

The oculoplastics fellow will perform around 2,000 procedures as primary surgeon, including upper and lower blepharoplasties, ptosis repair, Mohs reconstructions, orbital surgery, lacrimal surgery, cosmetic laser surgery, cosmetic injectables, and laser skin resurfacing. A unique aspect of this fellowship includes high volume primary aesthetic surgeries with the use of CO2 lasers. The fellow may also pursue additional surgical opportunities in Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, and more.

The fellow participates in oculoplastics call with all primary on-call duties performed by the Duke Eye Center residents. There are 2-3 weeks of general attending globe call a year, but the fellow is not expected to participate in any primary ophthalmology call.

Fellows are required to conduct clinical research in the oculoplastics department during their fellowship. There is flexibility in the schedule and available academic time for the fellow to facilitate such scholarly goals.
