Duke Eye Center is delighted to announce that W. Daniel Stamer, PhD, FARVO, Professor of Ophthalmology and Biomedical Engineering, has been elected the next Executive Vice President (EVP) of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). His five‑year term will begin at the 2027 ARVO Annual Meeting and continue through May 2032.
In this role as EVP, Dr. Stamer will serve on the Board of Trustees and act as the main connection between the Board and ARVO staff on day‑to‑day operations. He will oversee the Executive Director, lead the ARVO Annual Meeting Program Committee, and participate in nearly all ARVO committees. It’s a position that helps guide how the organization runs, grows, and supports the global vision research community.
Dr. Stamer brings nearly two decades of leadership within ARVO. His service began eighteen years ago on the Annual Meeting Program Committee for the Physiology/Pharmacology section, where he later served as chair. He joined the Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science editorial board in 2012 and was elected PH Trustee in 2015, contributing to several key committees, including professional development, education, and Members‑in‑Training, and ultimately chairing the finance committee.
He has also played an important role within the ARVO Foundation, chairing the Awards Committee and founding the review committee for EyeFind grants. A member of the Dowling Society, he was recognized as a Foundation honoree in 2023. His recent work includes serving on ARVO’s strategic planning committee and leading the organization’s NIH R13 conference grant, which supports seventy‑two travel awards annually through 2030.
In his candidate statement, Dr. Stamer highlighted his commitment to supporting early‑career researchers, raising the visibility of ARVO members’ scientific accomplishments, and strengthening engagement across ARVO’s international community of sixty‑one countries. He emphasized the profound impact ARVO has had on his career and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to give back through this leadership role.
Duke Eye Center congratulates Dr. Stamer on this distinguished achievement and celebrates his continued leadership in advancing vision research worldwide.
