Duke Eye Center Serves at Special Olympics Summer Games with Opening Eyes NC

Duke Eye Center Faculty and Staff were among the volunteers that served with Opening Eyes NC on June 3, 2023 at the Special Olympics Summer Games. Together they performed 127 eye screenings and prescribed 25 pairs of glasses to athletes that were competing in the games.  

Opening Eyes is program that is changing lives across the globe by providing comprehensive eye assessments, prescription eyewear, sunglasses, and sports goggles to Special Olympics athletes and people with intellectual disabilities. 

Melissa Daluvoy, MD, associate professor of ophthalmology in the cornea division is the medical director for the Opening Eyes North Carolina chapter. Duke Eye Center supports Daluvoy's efforts by donating supplies and recruiting volunteers to help provide essential eye screenings at Special Olympics events.
