Three Duke Eye Center retina specialists recently served as faculty at the 2026 Mass Eye and Ear Vitrectomy Course in Boston, helping provide hands-on surgical education to first-year retina fellows from across the country.
Sharon Fekrat, MD, FACS, FASRS, Xi Chen, MD, PhD, and Yannek Leiderman, MD, PhD, joined a national team of vitreoretinal surgery educators for the intensive training course, which prepares new retina fellows for the technical and clinical challenges of vitreoretinal surgery through lectures, simulation, and wet lab experiences.
The course also included participation from several Duke trainees. Incoming vitreoretinal fellows Omar Halawa, MD, Haley D'Souza, MD, and Ryan Sameen Meshkin, MD, attended the program, along with residents Naveen Karthik, MD, and Emily Jung, MD.
The annual course brings together leading retina specialists and trainees from across the United States, offering an opportunity to develop surgical skills, learn from experienced faculty, and build professional connections early in fellowship training.
