Duke Research Featured in International Ocular Immunology Webinar

Researchers from Duke Eye Center will help lead an upcoming international webinar exploring the role of the immune system in eye disease and the development of emerging therapeutic approaches.

On October 8, the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) Immunotherapy Committee will host Immunotherapy in Eye Disease: From Immune Pathobiology to Therapeutic Targeting, a global webinar that will bring together leading scientists to discuss how immune mechanisms drive disease across different ocular tissues and how these discoveries are advancing new treatments.

The webinar is co-organized by Daniel Saban, PhD, Joseph A.C. Wadsworth Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology and Vice Chair of Research Strategy and Richard Lee, MD, of the National Eye Institute.

Among the featured speakers is Cathy Bowes Rickman, PhD, George and Geneva Boguslavsky Distinguished Professor of Eye Research, who will present on complement biology as a therapeutic target in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Her presentation will highlight ongoing research examining immune pathways involved in retinal disease and the development of targeted therapies.

The program will also feature presentations on:

  • Myeloid and lymphocyte dynamics in ocular surface disease
  • Spatial proteomic mapping in uveitis
  • Complement biology as a therapeutic target in AMD
  • The eye-brain immune axis in ocular oncology

The eye is an immunologically distinct organ, and growing insights into immune pathobiology are creating new opportunities for therapeutic intervention. The webinar will provide a forum for researchers from around the world to share discoveries spanning ocular surface disease, retinal disorders, uveitis, and ocular oncology.

The event also highlights Duke Eye Center's leadership in vision research and its contributions to advancing the understanding of immune mechanisms that drive eye disease.

The webinar is free and open to researchers, clinicians, trainees, and anyone interested in ocular immunology.
