Laura Enyedi, MD recently hosted Healio’s Mend the Gap podcast episode, “Live from AAO 2025: Identifying Challenges Surgeons May Experience When Pregnant.” The 31‑minute conversation brings important visibility to the unique physical and occupational challenges women surgeons face during and after pregnancy.
Enyedi was joined by LaKrystal Warren, MD, FACOG, an OB/GYN; Kasey Picciano, PT, DPT, a pelvic floor physical therapist; and Jaya B. Kumar, MD, FASRS, a vitreoretinal surgeon. Together, they explored pregnancy‑related risk factors for surgeons, pelvic health considerations, ergonomics in the operating room, exposure concerns, postpartum recovery, and strategies to support surgeon well‑being throughout pregnancy.
The discussion also highlighted practical guidance, from exercises that support pelvic stability to approaches for managing varicose veins and navigating the postpartum period. Each guest shared insights on what they wish they had known before pregnancy and how women surgeons can better prepare for the physical demands of their profession.
