Sharon Fekrat, MD was featured in a recent Medscape article discussing new five-year data on pegcetacoplan for geographic atrophy (GA), an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration.
The article highlighted research showing that patients who begin treatment earlier may preserve more retinal tissue than those who start later. Fekrat noted that because retinal tissue lost to GA cannot currently be restored, the findings reinforce the importance of considering treatment before significant disease progression occurs.
She also emphasized that treatment decisions should be individualized, balancing the potential benefits of slowing disease progression with the burden of ongoing eye injections and office visits.
