Jaya Badhwar Kumar MD, ophthalmology resident has been named "Volunteer of the Year" by ReSpectacle, a nonprofit organization that uses the power of the Internet to facilitate redistribution of quality, used eyeglasses to underserved communities worldwide.
Badhwar serves as the Site Director of ReSpectacle Durham, NC and has volunteered for ReSpectacle in varying capacity since her days as a medical student at Saint Louis University in 2011. Major contributions in 2015 included leading the ReSpectacle chapter at Duke University; a presentation at the 2015 Women in Ophthalmology Conference that led to several unique collaborations and inspired interest from several new cities; Finally, she worked with Sharon Freedman MD in developing the sizing categories for pediatric frames.
