Post Doc Fellow Awarded Travel Grant to Present Retinal Degeneration Research

By Duke Today Staff

Duke Postdoctoral Fellow Thomas Ray was selected to present his research on the molecular basis of retinal disease at the 28th International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration. The meeting was held Sept 3-8, 2018, in Killarney, Ireland. Ray received a travel grant, funded by the Foundation Fighting Blindness, to attend the meeting and present his work on the CRB1 gene.

The work was done at Duke Eye Center in collaboration with Jeremy N. Kay, Assistant Professor of Neurobiology and Ophthalmology. CRB1 is linked to inherited retinal disorders such as Leber’s congenital amaurosis and retinitis pigmentosa. The groundbreaking findings presented by Ray at this meeting suggest novel approaches for diagnosing and treating these devastating vision disorders.
