
Alexander Richardson, Anita Kundu, Ricardo Henao, Terry Lee, MD, Burton L. Scott, Dilraj S. Grewal, MD, and Sharon Fekrat, MD, FARS, FASCS published, "A Convolutional Neural Network to Identify Parkinson’s Disease using Multimodal Retinal Images" in the Journal of the Alzheimer's Association.
Their article discussed how retinal structure and microvasculature can indicate brain processes. Previous studies have shown differences in retinal features between Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients and controls. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was developed to identify PD using retinal images.
The CNN successfully identified PD, and further work aims to expand the dataset and population diversity for better translatability.
