SriniVas Sadda, MD, FARVO, will join Duke Health as chair of the Department of Ophthalmology effective November 10, 2026.
An internationally recognized leader in ophthalmology, Sadda’s work has advanced the field through innovations in retinal imaging, data science, and clinical care. He brings a vision for integrating research and patient care, and he is well positioned to lead Duke Ophthalmology into its next phase of growth and impact.
He currently serves as the A. Ray Irvine, Jr., MD, Endowed Chair in Clinical Ophthalmology and Professor of Ophthalmology at the Doheny Eye Institute and the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. He completed his medical degree, residency, and fellowship training at Johns Hopkins University’s Wilmer Eye Institute, where he trained in both neuro-ophthalmology and medical retina. A highly accomplished physician-scientist, his research focuses on automated retinal image analysis, retinal substructure assessment, and advanced imaging technologies.
Sadda is widely respected for his leadership in the ophthalmology field, having served as president of the Doheny Eye Institute, as well as president of international organizations including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). He serves on multiple editorial boards and is the editor-in-chief of the foundational text in his field. His honors include the Research to Prevent Blindness Physician-Scientist Award, the Senior Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists, Achievement and Secretariat Awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Charles Schepens Lecture and Award from the Retina Society, the Paul Henking Lecture and Award from the Macula Society, and the John H. Zumberge Research and Innovation Award.
