Duke Eye Center had the honor of hosting the Annual Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Lecture on July 18, featuring guest speaker, Tamara Fountain, MD, 125th President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Duke Eye Center Hosts PRIME Summer Academy Student
Jessica Brinson, a medical student at Howard University College of Medicine, participated in the PRIME Summer Academy and was mentored by Paloma Liton, PhD and Dan Stamer, PhD. The program is designed to broaden the biomedical research workforce by exposing first and second year medical school students to a variety of research pursuits, including lab-based research, genetics research, and global health research, all during a six- to eight-week session.
Duke SOM EDI Spotlight: Mary Moya-Mendez
In this month’s Duke School of Medicine (SOM) EDI Spotlight, Mary Moya-Mendez, MS, MHS shares what motivated her to get involved with a SOM organization aimed at helping students with a first generation and/or low income background navigate medical school. She also recounts how an event sponsored by the organization positively impacted her and other students and describes how she “finally felt at home in medical school” after being paired with a mentor who shares a similar background.
