Retinitis Pigmentosa is a genetic disorder characterized by group of rare eye diseases that cause cells in the retina to break down slowly over time, eventually leading to progressive vision loss and blindness. The first symptom is often night blindness, followed by a gradual loss of peripheral vision.
Although there is currently no cure for Retinitis Pigmentosa, Duke Eye Center is at the forefront of retinal research, with Alekseev and his team leading several research studies to explore innovative treatments options to offer hope to patients coping with this debilitating disorder.

Martina Manning noticed her two sons couldn’t see as well in the dark. After realizing how abnormal this was, she took them to a retina doctor. One son was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa and has been undergoing treatment to improve his vision.
While her son is undergoing treatment and taking measures to preserve his vision, Martina is working to develop a non-profit organization to aid research for this disease to help future patients.
