Duke at AAO 2024

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting will be held October 18 - 20, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois. This year, the event promises to be particularly enriching, with over 65 presentations, posters, and symposiums that Duke Eye Center faculty, residents, and fellows will present throughout the course of the meeting covering a broad range of ophthalmic advancements and innovations.

Professor of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmology Residency Program Director, Pratap Challa, MD, will be honored with the Straatsma Award for Excellence in Resident Education. This award was established through the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology and private funds, and is given to a program director dedicated to the principles and significance of residency education.

Professor of Ophthalmology, Laura Enyedi, MD will be honored with the Senior Achievement Award and theSecretariat Award, recognizing special contributions to the Academy, its scientific and educational programs and to ophthalmology. She also is serving on the planning committee for the Pediatric Ophthalmology Subspecialty Day.

Associate Professor of Ophthalmology Kourtney Houser, MD is serving on the Cataract Subcommittee, helping to plan the scientific program including instruction courses, symposia and the spotlight on during the Cataracts Session.

Professor of Ophthalmology Lejla Vajzovic, MD, FASRS will be a panelist during the Eyecelerator program in session two, "Lessons Learned: Impact of Practice Dynamics on Innovative Therapies."

Duke Eye Center has three faculty members actively serving as representatives on the American Academy of Ophthalmology Council, a distinguished honor bestowed upon them by their peers.

  • Laura Enyedi, MD serves as Deputy Section Leader, representing Women in Ophthalmology. 
  • Pratap Challa, MD serves on the Section Nominating Committee, representing the American Board of Ophthalmology.
  • Lejla Vajzovic, MD, FASRS serves on the Section Nominating Committee and representing the Retina Society.
