Duke Ophthalmic Assistant Honored with BEE Award

Congratulations to Duke Ophthalmic Assistant, Erica Norman, for receiving the 2024 BEE Award, presented by the Duke University Hospital Healthy Work Environment Meaningful Recognition sub-committee! The BEE award, established in 2023, stands for "Being Extraordinary Everyday" and honors members of the nursing support personnel who have gone the extra mile while providing care to patients, caregivers, and their coworkers.

Erica was selected out of 150 entries, chosen through the Meaningful Recognition Committee who scores the submissions.

Erica's nomination story:

"I brought my 9-year-old twins for their scheduled eye appointments with Dr Cheung. Erica was the nursing assistant that received us and did all the eye tests prior to Dr Cheung seeing us. Erica introduced herself and throughout the entire visit explained what she was doing every step of the way. She was patient and kind to the children, taking time to patiently answer all their questions in language that they could understand (my kids love science and have very curious minds and were intrigued by the pictures and details of the inside of the eyes). When we needed to move from one room to the next for the different eye testing, Erica explained the reason for the room switch and courteously explained where we were going. We have been to many eye appointments but have not met a nurse assistant that had such a refreshing bedside manner. We look forward to having her on our next visit."
