Eye stroke is a rare but serious condition that causes permanent vision loss and devastating quality of life challenges that should be treated with the same urgency as those who suffer a stoke affecting the brain. Not previously given the awareness it deserves, eye stroke recently gained national attention in the New York Times article, "Suddenly the Man Couldn’t See. Was His Chest Pain Connected?" which discusses the link between eye stroke and heart disease as well as the importance of urgently assessing people with eye strokes.
The Duke Eye Stroke clinic aims to raise awareness and provide multidisciplinary care to people who have suffered from eye strokes, allowing for patients to see an ophthalmologist and a neurologist in the same location. Patients can receive follow-up care for the eye stroke, and at the same time, undergo diagnostic testing to better understand and reduce their risk of another stroke.
