Our own Sharon Fekrat, MD and Kelly Muir, MD, MHSc were featured in the the Duke AWS (Duke SOM Chapter of the Association of Women Surgeons) Mentorship Spotlight.
MS4 and aspiring ophthalmologist Delaram Mirzania worked under the mentorship of Muir on a collaborative project with the Duke VIP lab. They applied a deep learning algorithm to teleretinal fundus images, with the goal of improving access to vision preserving treatment through early detection of glaucoma. She also worked with Fekrat on investigating the impact of patient sex on retinal vascular disease findings and outcomes.
Mirzania stated "Working under the mentorship of D.r Muir and Dr. Fekrat, I have learned how to critically think about clinical questions and examine potential solutions in order to improve vision care for patients. These skills will certainly help me as a future ophthalmologist and scientist hoping to advance patient care through thoughtful and patient-centered research projects/ I am grateful to my mentors, Dr. Muir and Dr. Fekrat, for guiding me as I develop my professional identity as a clinician and scientist."
