Wei White Shares Insights on the Growing Problem of Nearsightedness

Pediatric optometrist Qiaohui Wei White, OD was recently featured on WRAL News to share valuable insights regarding the growing problem of nearsightedness in children and what parents can do to help reduce their child’s risk.

“Kids now spend much more time indoors. They read their books, they play their Legos and they watch their cartoons,” she said. “All of this near-work gives your eye the signal that you want to read more closely, so the brain will think you need to become nearsighted because it will be easier to read.”

White adds that spending more time outdoors can also help slow down progression of myopia once it’s already started.
