Dear Friends,

As I write my final letter for VISION magazine, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable journey I have been privileged to experience as a faculty member, division chief, and ultimately as Chair of Duke Ophthalmology. Over the last 12 years, our department has achieved extraordinary success — groundbreaking discoveries, leadership in clinical trials that have delivered new therapies, and countless honors that speak to the excellence of our faculty, trainees, and staff. Most importantly, we have provided innovative, sight restoring care to hundreds of thousands of patients in our clinics and abroad.

We have also weathered challenges together. Through it all, our faculty, trainees, and staff have shown unwavering dedication and resilience. It is our people who make this department truly extraordinary.

We have remained steadfast in our mission. Our research programs continue to advance eye care, leading to FDA approved treatments that are preserving vision and changing lives every day. Duke Ophthalmology educational programs remain among the very best; our trainees go on to lead, innovate, and make a difference wherever their careers take them. And our commitment to continuing medical education ensures that our impact extends far beyond Duke.

Although I will continue to see a few long-term patients, I am now turning my attention to my role as Vice President for Duke-NUS. Even so, these past 40 years as a member of Duke Ophthalmology have shaped me profoundly. This has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to lead this exceptional department. Duke Ophthalmology is defined by its people — the collaboration, the passion for our field, and the shared commitment to curing eye disease worldwide. Thank you for allowing me to be part of this phenomenal community.
