Three Duke Ophthalmic Photographers received awards for their photography and video submissions at the 2023 Ophthalmic Photographer's Society Scientific Exhibition at the American Academy of O

Durga S. Borkar, MD, MMCi, presented a study at AAO 2023 which found that eligibility criteria prevents more Black individuals than White individuals from participating in clinical trials for diabetic macular edema. 

Catherine Bowes-Rickman, PhD, George and Geneva Boguslavsky Distinguished Professor of Eye Research, will be honored at the 2023 Future Vision Foundation Award Gala for her research efforts focused on molecular/cell biology and pathobiology of age-related macular degeneration. The foundation will showcase Bowes-Rickman's work with an inspirational film tribute that will debut during the Gala on November 11, 2023 at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Less than three years ago, Daniel Johnson was diagnosed with eye cancer that threatened not just his eyesight, but potentially his life. Thanks to the expertise of Jason Liss, MD, his oculofacial plastic surgeon at Duke Health, today Johnson enjoys spending peaceful afternoons on his back porch in La Grange, NC.

The annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) will be held November 3-6, 2023 in San Francisco, CA. Duke Eye Center will have over 75 presentations, posters, and symposiums that our faculty, residents, and fellows will present throughout the course of the meeting with 10 subspecialty day presentations.

Cythnia Toth, MD, Joseph AC Wadsworth Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology, received the prestigious honor of presenting the Gisbert Richard Keynote Lecture at the EURETINA 2023 annual meeting on October 7, 2023 in Amsterdam.  

Duke University researchers created a computer program that determines, with 94% accuracy, if a person's age-related macular degeneration (AMD) will worsen within a year.  

Goldis Malek, PhD, Vice Chair of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Associate Professor in Ophthalmology, Pathology, and Cell Biology is the 2022 recipient of the RSF Awards in Science for Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics. This award is presented by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. and the Rosalind Franklin Society to recognize outstanding published peer-reviewed research by women and underrepresented minorities in science. 

Duke Eye Center hosted the 35th Annual Glaucoma Symposium, along with the 6th Annual Glaucoma Fellows Course October 13-14, 2023.
