Preeya Gupta, MD, is the program char of this Dry Eye CME. Dry eye disease (DED) is a condition of the ocular surface in which multiple factors are responsible for the disturbance of the stability of tear film, leading to changes in vision and symptoms that significantly disrupt the quality of life of many individuals in the United States and elsewhere. There is a well-known association of several systemic diseases associated with dry-eye syndrome, among them Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma and systemic lupus erythematosus. This activity will examine the diagnostic tools and techniques for identifying patients with autoimmune-related dry eye disease as well as the association between MMP-9 and dry eye disease. A review of the long-term safety and efficacy of current treatments for dry eye disease will also be addressed.
