World's Children's Initiative (WCI) has partnered with Charlotte MEDI to deliver more than 2000 face shields to Duke University Hospital with the assistance of our own Melissa Daluvoy, MD.
Daluvoy's husband Sanjay Daluvoy, MD and president of WCI responds to the lack of Personal Protective Equipment stating “The COVID-19 virus has rapidly upended every element of our lives, creating unparalleled damage and threatening every element of our society. Never have I seen in my lifetime, a call to arms of this magnitude, breadth and depth. From governments to multinational corporations to delivery truck drivers to grocery stockers to our pride - the healthcare workers, techs, nurses & doctors, we must all stand together now and give everything we got to overcome this epic challenge" and they did just that.
The face shields that have been created and distributed allow for healthcare workers to protect themselves and their N95 masks prolonging their usage. The design of the face shields have gone through modifications and prototypes were tested by medical professionals to respond to the healthcare workers’ needs. The design and material allow for stability during procedures and cleaning with disinfectant wipes for multi-use. With WCI’s partnership, Charlotte MEDI’s production has expanded to increase the production. Previously focused on local distribution, the shields will now be shipped across the nation. Thousands of face shields will be distributed to hospitals in multiple states in the coming days and weeks.
