Duke Eye Center Faculty and Staff were among the volunteers that served with Opening Eyes NC on June 3, 2023 at the Special Olympics Summer Games. Together they performed 127 eye screenings and prescribed 25 pairs of glasses to athletes that were competing in the games. 

Eleanora Lad, MD, PhD, associate professor of ophthalmology, sat down with Mary Klotman, MD, dean of Duke School of Medicine, to discuss the recent clinical trials that led to the first drug approved by the FDA to treat a devastating eye disease called Geographic Atrophy.

Duke Eye Center is proud to announce that Eleonora Lad, MD, PhD has been named Vice Chair for Clinical Research. Lad is a clinician scientist and retinal ophthalmologist with an extensive background in research, both as an investigator and in her role as Director of Clinical Research Unit (CRU).

Duke Eye Center Retina Faculty Ramiro Maldonado, MD, and Vitreoretinal Fellow Nita Valikodath, MD, MS had their article, "Fundus Autofluorescence For IRDs", featured in the April 2023 issue of Retinal Today. In the article, they provide an overview of the use of FAF imaging in various IRDs and how it can be useful in diagnosis and monitoring, even in the early stages of these diseases. 

Sarah Eom, PhD student in the Pratt School of Engineering, will present her research on "Edge-based Augmented Reality (AR) Guidance System for Retinal Laser Therapy via Feature Matching" at the 22nd International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks held May 9-12, 2023 in San Antonio, TX. 

Eleonora Lad, MD, PhD was featured in a patient education video about the new treatment available for geographic atrophy (GA).

Six members of the Duke Eye Center photography team received top honors and images were displayed at the Ophthalmic Photographers’ Society (OPS) Exhibit at the 2023 ASCRS annual meeting.

The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) held it's annual meeting May 5-8, 2023 in San Diego, California.
