The 56th annual meeting of the Retina Society is being held October 11 – 14, 2023 in New York City. The mission of the Retina Society is to "reduce worldwide visual disability and blindness by encouraging education and professional interaction of vitreoretinal specialists, providing optimal care for patients with vitreoretinal diseases, and encouraging, through clinical and basic research, the discovery and development of new means to further patient care." Cynthia Toth, MD, is a pioneer in the development of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), over the last 30 years she and her colleagues including Joseph Izatt, PhD, Michael J. Fitzpatrick Distinguished Professor of Engineering, and Chair of Duke BME have revolutionized OCT. Toth and Izat have translated OCT to human imaging and over the years refined and discovered innovative applications including the first handheld OCT imaging system.

More than three quarters of the estimated 43 million people in the world who are blind could regain sight through medical intervention. But around 90 percent of these cases of preventable blindness occur in low- and middle-income countries, which often lack the resources to perform sight-saving procedures such as cataract surgeries and corneal transplants.
